Job Description

The Director of Sports Nutrition / Football will oversee all areas of nutrition support for Virginia Tech Football including athlete feeding, supplementation, hydration, and nutrition educational needs. The person in this position will exemplify Virginia Tech Athletics Department’s 5 core values: Integrity, Service, Honor, Excellence and Strong Together. This position reports directly to the Associate Athletic Director of Sports Nutrition.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or related field with related experience.
Registered Dietitian; completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics.
Ability to work a nonstandard work week which includes nights, weekends, and holidays.
Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to handle a fast-paced, intense work environment.
Sports nutrition experience.


Preferred Qualifications

Completion of or working towards a Board Certification for Specialist in Sports Dietetics.
Significant work experience as a Registered Dietitian.
Previous employment in intercollegiate or professional athletics.
Previous experience working with collegiate or professional football.
Member of the American Sports and Performance Dietitians Association (ASPDA).


Salary Information

Commensurate with experience.


Hours per week

40+. Nights and weekends as needed.

JOB DUTIES

% of time Duties / Responsibilities

 

40% SPORT OVERSIGHT

 

·      Provide leadership and direction to the full scope of VT football team’s nutritional needs; these include athlete feeding, hydration, weight management, supplementation and nutrition educational and counseling.

·      Provide consistent communication with all collaborative staff; these include coaching, sports medicine, strength & conditioning sports science and C.A.M.P. (psychology) staff as well as administration regarding sports nutrition related issues.

·      Assist in recruiting efforts and provide in-depth education to nutritional plan and benefits students receive.

·      Coordinate and oversee as needed all nutritional needs during all team travel and travels with the team during all away competitions.

·      Lead nutritional operations for one-time events such as bowl games, ACC Championship, and post-season play.

 

20% CLINICAL

 

·      Assess, educate and counsel student athletes on optimal nutrition practices for athletic performance, recovery from training/competition, recovery from injury and illness, weight management, hydration and supplementation.

·      Assess and counsel student athletes on medical related nutrition by using appropriate medical nutrition therapy strategies for conditions such as orthopedic injuries, mTBI, metabolic disorders, hypertension, GI issues, nutrient deficiencies, food allergies and intolerances, autoimmune diseases, disordered eating, etc.

·      Administer new athlete nutrition screenings.

·      Conduct body composition assessments and analysis in coordination with athletic performance and sports science staff.

·      Assess hydration and cramp risk and manage hydration strategies throughout the season to maximize athlete availability and performance.

·      Assist in updating and facilitating all relevant nutrition related protocols and procedures in collaboration with the Associate AD for Sports Nutrition.

 

20% MANAGEMENT

 

·      Manage Sports Nutrition Fellow and Football student workers to deliver comprehensive nutrition support the team.

·      Maintain connection and integration within Virginia Tech Sports Nutrition through staff meetings, mentorship and continuing education.

·      Participate in Nutrition & Performance Committee meetings, Sports Science meetings and

·      Performance Team meetings.

·      Assist in precepting Dietetic Interns during their community/food service/elective rotation.

·      Assist in training and mentoring VTSN Fellows, dietetic interns, sports med fellows, HNFE field study students and student workers.

·      Oversee and manage Football nutrition budget and Gatorade budget for the Athletics department.

·      Maintain ASPDA professional membership and engagement to drive professional competency and growth.

·      Perform any other duties deemed necessary by the Associate AD for Sports Nutrition for the operation of the VT Sports Nutrition Program.

·      Ongoing and annual program and staff evaluation for continued improvement and efficiencies.

 

10% FOOD SERVICE

 

·      Oversee management of the Football Gatorade Fuel Bar including the ordering, inventory, and procurement of food products and supplies through various vendors.

·      Manage SAPC / Sodexo relationship / partnership alongside Associate AD for Sports Nutrition to ensure effective delivery of meals to support Football student athlete nutritional needs

·      Coordinate additional Football meals as needed, including menu development, coordination with football operations or direct communication with food vendor.

·      Manage Football lift and practice fueling and recovery responsibilities.

 

10% EDUCATION

 

·      Develop and deliver nutrition material, social media messaging, educational material, etc.

·      Develop, coordinate, and execute grocery store tours, cooking demos.

·      Research, analyze, and translate scientific literature related to nutrition and athletic performance and communicate it to Football athletes and support staff.
