Assistant Director of Sports Nutrition, Olympic
Position Summary:
The University of Memphis welcomes applications for the position of Assistant Director of Sports Nutrition to support the nutritional health, performance, and overall well-being of Olympic sport student-athletes. This position plays an integral role within the University's interdisciplinary high-performance team, providing individualized nutrition services, education, and collaborative support across assigned teams.
Reporting to the Director of Olympic Sports Nutrition, the Assistant Director will deliver evidence-based nutritional care tailored to sport-specific demands, medical considerations, and performance goals. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong clinical expertise, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to student-athlete development.
Primary Responsibilities:
Provide individualized performance nutrition counseling and medical nutrition therapy for assigned Olympic sport teams
Conduct assessments related to hydration, body composition, energy availability, and dietary intake
Develop and adjust fueling and hydration strategies aligned with training phases and competition schedules
Deliver team and individual education through presentations, workshops, and hands-on learning experiences
Collaborate with athletic trainers, strength & conditioning coaches, mental health professionals, and performance staff
Mentor graduate assistants, interns, and student volunteers participating in experiential learning rotations
Assist with fueling station operations, travel nutrition planning, and policy development
Contribute to applied research and program evaluation initiatives within the department
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Exercise Science, or a related field
Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential
Minimum of one (1) year of experience in clinical or sports nutrition
Must be eligible to obtain Tennessee state licensure within three (3) months of hire
Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) preferred, or willingness to obtain within two years
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with collegiate or high-performance athletes
Demonstrated ability to collaborate within an interdisciplinary team
Experience supervising student staff or interns
Strong organizational, communication, and presentation skills
Work Schedule and Conditions:
The work schedule for this position requires flexibility and may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and occasional travel to support team practices and competitions. A valid driver’s license is required. Work is performed in athletic facilities, training rooms, and both indoor and outdoor sports venues.
