The Athlete Nutrition Specialist will play a critical role in supporting the health, performance, and well-being of New Mexico State University (NMSU) student-athletes. This position is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive nutrition programs tailored to the unique needs of individual athletes and sports teams. The specialist will work closely with coaches, athletic trainers, and other support staff to align nutrition strategies with training programs and ensure compliance with NCAA regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Athlete Nutrition Counseling & Education

  • Provide personalized nutrition plans tailored to individual athletes' needs, including meal timing, hydration strategies, and sport-specific requirements.

  • Conduct one-on-one counseling and group workshops on topics such as meal planning, supplement use, weight management, and recovery nutrition.

  • Educate athletes on fueling strategies for training, competition, and recovery to enhance performance and reduce the risk of injury.

2. Performance Optimization

  • Collaborate with coaches, athletic trainers, and strength staff to integrate nutrition strategies into training programs.

  • Design and implement game-day nutrition protocols, including pre/post-game meals, hydration stations, and travel nutrition plans.

  • Evaluate and apply evidence-based practices for performance enhancement, including safe and compliant supplement recommendations.

3. Meal Planning & Food Service Coordination

  • Oversee and manage fueling stations, ensuring they are stocked with performance-focused snacks and supplements.

  • Partner with campus dining services and external vendors to provide athlete-friendly meals that meet nutritional needs.

  • Develop customized meal plans for athletes with specific needs, including weight management, injury recovery, and special diets (e.g., vegetarian, gluten-free).

4. Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure all nutrition programs and supplement recommendations adhere to NCAA and university policies regarding banned substances and safe usage.

  • Provide ongoing education to athletes and staff on supplement safety and maintain current knowledge of NCAA compliance standards.

5. Data & Program Management

  • Maintain detailed records of athlete nutrition plans, progress, and consultations.

  • Evaluate and refine the nutrition program using current research, best practices, and athlete feedback.

6. Outreach & Education

  • Conduct nutrition workshops for student-athletes, coaches, and support staff to promote a culture of health and performance.

  • Create educational materials, including meal guides, recipe books, and travel nutrition resources.

  • Support recruiting efforts by highlighting NMSU’s commitment to athlete health and performance through innovative nutrition programming.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in nutrition, dietetics, exercise science, or a related field required; Master's degree preferred.

  • Registered Dietitian (RD) credential or Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) preferred.

  • Experience working with collegiate or professional athletes in a nutrition capacity.

  • Strong knowledge of NCAA regulations regarding nutrition and supplement use.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
