Job Summary
Sports Nutrition Assistants will work within Pirates Minor League, providing clinical, education, food service, and performance nutrition services to their assigned team in order to optimize the health and on-field success of the players in the Pirates organization. Sports Nutrition Assistants will also be an active member of the Sports Nutrition team, creating consistent menus and messaging across the organization, and cohesive care for athletes moving within the organization. Primary responsibilities include organizing all meals pre and post for assigned team, menu creation, supplement and snack ordering, inventory and budgeting, light stocking of snacks and supplements, nutrition education, and when appropriate, medical nutrition therapy. Sports Nutrition Assistants are a collaborative member of the Performance and Player Development departments, being the nutrition resource for strength and conditioning, athletic training, physical therapy, coaching, and player development staff. This position will report to the Minor League Nutrition Coordinator.
Responsibilities:
Performance Nutrition
- Utilize organizational platforms to create individualized player nutrition plans to support players’ on-field success
- Distribute appropriate pre-, during, and post-exercise fluids and snacks
- Distribute supplements as needed to players in compliance with MLB/MiLB/Pirates
- Manage on-field fueling and hydration during games
- Actively participate in collaborative performance meetings for assigned team
- Complete and communicate routine documentation regarding player consults, plans, and development
Food Service and Team Meals
- Coordinate all home and away meals
- Create all meal menus
- Monitor meal times for compliance, education, and taste
- Order and stock supplements
- Manage daily/weekly product inventory including receiving and storing products (snacks and supplements) in appropriate places
- Responsible for inventory of snacks, supplements, recovery
- Responsible for food and supplement budget for assigned team
- Make smoothies and snack bags, as needed
Clinical Nutrition
- Perform sweat rate analysis, as needed/directed
- Perform hydration testing regularly via urine-specific gravity
- Create personalized hydration strategies
- Perform body composition measurements on a determined schedule
Education
- Create and provide educational content consistent with organization-wide philosophies and goals
Professional Development
- Actively participate in collaborative performance meetings for assigned team
- Gain experience as lead dietitian for a professional team
- Communicate regularly with the supervising RD to ensure the plan of care for athletes is consistent across the organization
Other Duties as Assigned
- In addition, Sports Nutrition Assistants may have other tasks/lead assignments to assist their team or our department. Duties, responsibilities and activities may change at any time with or without notice.
Qualifications
Required:
- Authorized to work lawfully in the United States.
- Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics
- Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) credential
- FL state licensure (LD) (or required upon hire)
Desired:
- Master’s degree
- Fluent in Spanish
- Knowledge of MLB/MiLB compliance
