GENERAL OVERVIEW

 

The Liberty University Athletic Department is currently seeking applicants for a Sports Nutrition Fellow to begin October, 2024. This is a one-year position that will assist in the development of the LUSN Department. Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Sports Nutrition, this individual will provide nutrition education and counseling, and assist, as well as lead in program development for assigned teams and student-athletes. 

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Works as an integrative member of the Champion Performance team to support the Vision of Liberty University Athletics and Mission of Champion Performance.
  • Assists Senior Director of Sports Nutrition with all aspects of providing comprehensive nutrition services to all Liberty University Division I student athletes.  Including: comprehensive nutrition assessments, administering and interpreting body composition analysis; implementing individual and team nutrition plans, providing nutrition education to individuals and teams; creating and updating nutrition education materials; ordering, storing and distributing NCAA compliant snacks and supplements; counseling athletes on dietary supplements/ergogenic aid use and banned substances, providing guidance on travel meals. 
  • Collaborates and maintains effective communication with coaching staffs, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, team physicians, athletic administration, and food service personnel regarding athletes’ nutrition needs.
  • Attend and participate in ED Care Team Meetings. 
  • Lead nutrition education, support menu development, and provide meal coverage at the Champion Performance Training Table
  • Assist in management of assigned Fueling Station operations including product inventory, ordering, receiving, unloading, and distribution and assist in management of student workers.
  • Assists in managing department’s social media accounts.
  • Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products and services. 
  • Maintain a working knowledge of and adherence to NCAA, Conference USA and institutional rules and regulations.

·      Strong organizational skills to manage shifting priorities and changing pace of workload.

·      Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with culturally diverse students and staff.

·      Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction.

·      Ability to work a non-standard workweek including nights, weekends, and some holidays.

  • Other duties: Perform other program duties as assigned by the Sports Nutrition Staff
 SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES   

This position is responsible for assisting in the supervision of work study students, volunteers, and interns in nutrition related areas.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

Education and Experience

 

Minimum Qualifications:  

•                Bachelor’s degree in clinical nutrition, dietetics, food and nutrition or a related area

•                Registered Dietitian or RD Eligible 

•                Ability to work a non-standard workweek which may include nights, weekends, and holidays

•                Ability to collaborate as an integral part of the champion performance team

•                Ability to work independently, take initiative and complete work tasks with minimal direction

•                Time and priority management skills

•                Excellent oral and written communication skills

•                Excellent interpersonal skills

•                Creative thinking and problem solving skills

•                Knowledge of sports nutrition, medical nutrition therapy, eating disorders/disordered eating

•                Ability to be punctual, enthusiastic, and self-motivated

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in a collegiate sports nutrition setting 

Licenses and Certifications:                       

Minimum       Registered Dietitian or RD Eligible. Must maintain CPR certification at all times.

Preferred       Master’s Degree in Nutrition or related area

Physical and Sensory Abilities
  • Frequently required to sit for extended periods to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard.  
  • Requires physical efforts including standing, lifting, pulling, pushing and carrying light (0-15lbs.), moderately heavy (15 – 50 lbs), and heavy objects (50+ lbs).
  • Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to weather extremes.
  • Demands require prolonged mental concentration.
  • Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate orally.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the building.
  • Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.
 WORKING CONDITIONS Work Environment

The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is a climate-controlled office, weight room, or fueling station setting as well as outdoor exposure in extreme conditions. It is well lighted and the noise level is moderate but extreme at times.  

  Driving Requirements

Use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) is required for travel in the performance of the essential functions of this position.  Proof of a valid driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.
